A foundation
worth building.

The Britannia Football Lodge Founders’ Pack: our vision, the commitment we ask of founders and the practical path to a sustainable lodge.

Revised formation edition · 7 October 2026 · PDF and Word include the full pledge, officer planning, confidential information form and blank founders’ register. A working document, not an approved petition.

Proposed, not yet constituted.

Our intended base is Kettering Masonic Centre. We propose Friday lodge meetings with Saturday non-league match visits within the Province. Exact dates, frequency, final meeting arrangements, subscriptions and fees, officer appointments, partnerships and approvals remain to be agreed. Match visits depend on fixtures and practical arrangements. Founder applications are subject to eligibility and certificate verification.

01

Purpose of the pack

For brethren considering becoming founders of Britannia Football Lodge, this pack sets out the proposed identity, purpose, expectations, governance, recruitment and practical steps from concept to a sustainable lodge.

Football is a gateway to friendship, engagement and high-quality Freemasonry. We embrace the whole game: professional, semi-professional, non-league and grassroots football; playing, coaching, refereeing, administration, volunteering and supporting. Britannia will not be attached to a single club or league.

02

The Britannia vision

With Kettering Masonic Centre as its intended base, Britannia is broad in football identity and firmly rooted in the Province of Northamptonshire & Huntingdonshire, welcoming connections across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Our aim is enjoyable meetings without compromising the dignity or standards of Craft Freemasonry, fellowship that includes visitors and families, and a lodge that thrives beyond its founding generation through recruitment, mentoring and succession planning.

03

Becoming a founder

Under Rule 94, a petition for a new lodge in England requires not fewer than seven Master Masons regularly registered under UGLE. Seven is the constitutional minimum, not the recommended operating strength. We seek a substantially larger, genuinely committed team able to sustain all aspects of lodge life.

At initial sign-up, only acknowledge that you understand and agree to provide your lodge history and certificates later; you do not need to list current/former lodges or provide certificates now. When requested by the founding team, provide every current and former lodge’s full name and number and a Rule 175 certificate from each showing no indebtedness. Those details and documents must be obtained and checked before inclusion in the petition.

Every founder need not be a Past Master or have held Office. The first Worshipful Master has a specific qualification under the prescribed petition; first officer appointments and documentation must be checked with the Provincial Grand Secretary.

  • Be a Master Mason regularly registered under UGLE and in good standing.
  • Be willing to support the petition and consecration process.
  • Accept Britannia’s aims and culture, and contribute time, attendance and practical support.
  • If accepting Office, accept the additional Office Holder Commitment.
04

What we ask of a founder

Founder status means more than a name on a warrant. According to your circumstances and abilities, make Britannia a priority through attendance, preparation, ritual, Office duties, recruitment, mentoring, football engagement, social life and charity.

Protect a welcoming, respectful, non-partisan culture. Club rivalry belongs in friendly banter, never in division. A founder is helping build a future, not adding another notch to a belt.

05

The full founders’ pledge

The pledge is an internal statement of intent and culture. It does not replace or alter the Book of Constitutions, Lodge by-laws or Provincial requirements. Read and reflect on it before signing.

The complete pledge below is identical to the online application and the revised downloadable pack. Office holders additionally undertake 75% attendance, diligent duties, succession planning and the minimum twelve months’ notice when stepping away from a key Office.

OUR WORD. OUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Britannia Football Lodge
Founders’ Pledge

Founders’ Commitment

As a Founder of Britannia Football Lodge, I recognise that the success of this Lodge will depend upon the commitment, enthusiasm, and active participation of its founding members.

By accepting the honour of becoming a Founder, and particularly by accepting an Office within the Lodge, I make the following pledge:

I Pledge:

  1. 01To place the interests of Britannia Football Lodge above my personal ambitions and preferences.
  2. 02To attend Lodge meetings regularly and make every reasonable effort to fulfil the duties of any Office I undertake.
  3. 03To prepare diligently for any ceremonial, administrative, or organisational responsibilities entrusted to me.
  4. 04To support the Worshipful Master and his Officers in maintaining the highest standards of Freemasonry.
  5. 05To promote harmony, friendship, and mutual respect amongst all members of the Lodge.
  6. 06To actively assist in recruiting, welcoming, mentoring, and retaining new members.
  7. 07To support Lodge social events and charitable activities wherever possible.
  8. 08To act as a positive ambassador for Britannia Football Lodge, both within Freemasonry and beyond.
  9. 09To communicate openly and honestly should circumstances arise that affect my ability to fulfil my commitments, ensuring suitable arrangements can be made.
  10. 10To remember that the early years of the Lodge are critical to its long-term success and that my commitment as a Founder carries a special responsibility to future generations of members.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Office Holder Commitment

Any Founder accepting Office additionally undertakes:

  • To attend a minimum of 75% of Lodge meetings.
  • To attend Lodge of Instruction meetings where practical.
  • To ensure a suitable deputy or replacement is arranged if unable to attend.
  • To complete all tasks associated with their Office in a timely and professional manner.
  • To serve the Lodge for the full term of Office wherever possible.
  • To provide a minimum of twelve months' notice where they intend to step away from a key Office, allowing succession planning to take place.

Closing Declaration

“As a Founder of Britannia Football Lodge, I accept that I am not merely joining a Lodge; I am helping to build its future. I therefore give my word that I will support the Lodge with my time, effort, and commitment, so that future generations of Freemasons may enjoy a thriving Lodge founded upon friendship, integrity, and a shared love of football and Freemasonry.”

06

Proposed lodge dynamic

Britannia should feel unmistakably like a football lodge while remaining unmistakably a Masonic lodge. The theme should enhance the experience, not become a gimmick.

High-quality Craft ritual, preparation and support sit alongside sociable dining, visiting, proposed non-league match visits within the Province, Masonic charity and local football-community service. Grassroots and youth-development causes are among the proposed interests.

The proposed pattern is Friday lodge meetings at Kettering Masonic Centre with Saturday non-league match visits within the Province. Exact dates, frequency, final meeting and dining arrangements remain to be agreed with Province. Match visits depend on fixtures and logistics. The proposed emblem, future banner and regalia are subject to approval where required.

07

Aims and ambitions

Build constructive relationships across the football family and suitable football bodies, encourage visits to and from other lodges, deliver excellent ceremonies and develop a succession pipeline that does not depend indefinitely on the founders.

The longer-term aim includes a route into Freemasonry for suitable men connected with football, including younger adults. Initiation is subject to the current rules, including Rule 157’s minimum age of 18 and restriction at age 18 while in full-time secondary education or training. This is separate from the Master Mason-only founder application.

  • Football relationships, match visits and events that extend fellowship beyond meetings.
  • Fundraising and volunteering for Masonic and local football/community causes.
  • Relaxed, friendly enjoyment with high ceremonial standards.
  • Mentoring and officer succession built into the lodge from the outset.
08

Membership and recruitment

Use the Members’ Pathway approach: planning, attraction, engagement, mentoring and retention. Recruitment alone is not success; every new member needs support and a reason to stay.

Potential channels include existing football-minded Masons, professional and semi-professional contacts, non-league and grassroots clubs, coaches, referees, administrators, volunteers, sponsors and former players; Provincial/UGLE enquiries, introductions and appropriate public community events.

Football is the common interest, but suitability for Freemasonry remains essential. No club should dominate. Explain the commitment before joining, and allow brethren to progress at a pace appropriate to them rather than simply filling offices.

09

Formation to consecration

The ten-stage roadmap keeps constitutional steps, practical preparation and longer-term sustainability together. Dates and milestones remain subject to discussion with Province.

  1. Establish the core founders’ group

Confirm the concept, likely founding strength, leadership and pledge commitment.

  2. Engage Province

Agree process, expectations, venue, timetable and documentation with the Provincial Grand Secretary / leadership.

  3. Finalise the proposition

Confirm name, purpose, meeting pattern, dining, finances, membership profile and football engagement.

  4. Confirm founders and first officers

Verify eligibility, record all lodge history and obtain the required certificates.

  5. Sponsoring lodge recommendation

Arrange Rule 94 recommendation, summons notice and approval in open lodge.

  6. Prepare and submit the petition

Complete the prescribed petition and supporting documentation through Province.

  7. Prepare the infrastructure

Draft by-laws, banking/finance arrangements, subscriptions, records, summons and communications.

  8. Prepare for consecration

Agree ceremonial team, regalia/furniture, branding, dining, guests, rehearsals and communications.

  9. Launch the first-year programme

Plan ceremonies, candidate support, recruitment, football events and succession before consecration.

  10. Review after year one

Assess attendance, finances, recruitment, retention, ritual, mentoring and the founding model.

12

Founder information and signature

The downloads include initial awareness acknowledgements, the full pledge and signature fields. A separate, clearly labelled later-stage confidential information template accommodates current/former lodges, rank and Office history, preferred role, football connections and skills only when requested.

The online application collects basic contact details, Master Mason/UGLE confirmations, contribution, Office interest and the pledge, plus one acknowledgement that lodge details and Rule 175 certificates will be provided later. It does not request current/former lodge lists or certificate readiness at initial sign-up. Additional administrative information is for later secure founding-team follow-up, not public disclosure.

Neither form is the prescribed petition. Completed documents and certificates must be shared securely with authorised organisers; a submission or signature does not itself confer founder status or an Office.

13

Founders’ register

A blank twenty-place founders’ register is provided as an administrative template in the downloadable pack. It is not a cap or founding target, nor a public membership list. Keep completed registers private; names and roles require the appropriate verification and approvals.

14

The first 24 months

Agree measurable indicators before consecration. The following are a practical framework, not fixed numerical targets. Review progress honestly rather than mistaking a list of founders for an active lodge.

  • Healthy attendance, with founders setting the standard.
  • A functioning officer succession plan, not dependence on a handful of Past Masters.
  • A clear pipeline of suitable candidates and joining members.
  • Meaningful mentoring support for every new member.
  • At least one proposed football/community activity between regular meetings.
  • Saturday non-league match visits following Friday lodge meetings, where fixtures and logistics allow.
  • Financial performance within an approved budget and sustainable subscriptions.
  • Positive visiting and inter-lodge relationships.
  • Annual review of membership, retention, ritual, finances, social activity and founder engagement.
15

Constitutional and Provincial checks

The pack is a working formation document, not a substitute for the Book of Constitutions or Provincial instructions. Rule 94 covers the new-lodge petition, minimum signatories, full lodge history, Rule 175 certificates, sponsoring lodge recommendation, notice on the summons, approval in open lodge and onward transmission through Province.

Before formal submission, confirm the current petition, certificates, fees, first Master qualification, officer appointments, sponsoring-lodge process, proposed by-laws, venue, dates and any branding/regalia approvals with the Provincial Grand Secretary. Budgets, subscriptions and financial controls must be agreed before commitments are made.

The Province’s Members’ Pathway approach supports planning, attraction, mentoring, succession and retention. It does not constitute approval of Britannia. The source pack also credits the September 2023 Leather on Willow proposal as structural inspiration, not evidence of endorsement.
